Spacing Between Teeth

Gaps between teeth can develop when the size of the teeth is too small relative to the size of the tongue and jawbones, when one or more teeth are missing, or due to other factors—such as the mucosal fold between the upper front teeth, known as the labial frenum—that prevent the teeth from aligning perfectly side by side. In such cases, orthodontic treatment can be used to close the gaps.

Why does a gap form between the teeth?

A gap between the teeth, called a diastema, can develop for several reasons. It’s often genetic. If the teeth are smaller compared to the size of the jaw there will naturally be more space between them. In other cases a low-attaching upper lip frenum, tongue thrusting or certain childhood habits like pacifier use can cause spacing. In adulthood tooth movement or the loss of teeth can also lead to gaps.

How can spacing be treated?

Treatment depends on what is causing the space. In mild cases aesthetic solutions like veneers can be an option. But if several teeth are involved or we want to fully preserve the natural tooth structure, orthodontic treatment offers the most natural and stable result. With modern appliances, including clear aligners, the teeth can be moved gradually into the right position so the spaces close gently and permanently.

When is it best to treat a gap between teeth?

It’s usually best to start treating gaps in childhood, during the mixed dentition stage, around the age of 9, when the permanent front teeth are coming in. At this age, the dental arches are still flexible, and natural growth can be used to close gaps or align teeth more easily.

If the gap is treated later, in adulthood, orthodontic treatment is still possible, but the process may take longer, and in some cases additional procedures (such as gum reshaping or veneers) may be needed.
