Crowding

If there isn’t enough space in the mouth for the teeth to erupt in a single line, they become crowded, tilt against each other, or position themselves on multiple planes. This dental crowding typically worsens over time.

What is crowding?

Crowding means that the teeth don’t have enough space in the jaw, so they turn, overlap or grow in a misaligned position. This isn’t just an aesthetic issue. Crowded teeth are harder to clean, which can lead to tooth decay and gum inflammation in the long run.

Why does crowding develop?

There are several reasons why crowding can occur. In many cases there is a genetic tendency. If it runs in the family you’re more likely to have it too. It’s also common that the size of the teeth doesn’t match the size of the jaw. If the teeth are bigger than the space available they move out of position.

Childhood habits like thumb sucking, prolonged pacifier use, tongue thrusting or mouth breathing can also influence how the dental arch develops. Early loss of decidious teeth can cause crowding as well because the neighbouring teeth can shift and take up the space needed for the permanent tooth.

Can crowding be prevented?

In some cases yes. Regular dental check ups during childhood help us spot any developmental issues early. If needed a removable orthodontic appliance can guide the teeth into a better position and support healthy jaw growth.

Stopping harmful habits like prolonged pacifier use or thumb sucking is also very important. These may seem like small steps but in the long run they can prevent more serious problems for the child.

How can crowding be treated?

Crowding always requires an individual treatment plan. In mild cases a removable appliance can be enough, especially in childhood when the jaws are still growing, or with clear aligners in adulthood. In more severe cases a fixed orthodontic appliance gives the best results.

The goal of treatment is not only to line up the teeth but also to create a proper bite, keep the gums healthy and achieve a balanced facial appearance.

Do crowded teeth require extraction, and why shouldn’t you be worried about it?

In more severe cases extraction may be the only way to create enough space for the teeth to align properly. In these situations removing a tooth isn’t harmful. It’s actually what allows us to achieve a stable and harmonious result. The procedure is gentle, safe and completely painless, and the decision is always based on careful planning.

It’s also important to know that when the case is selected correctly, extraction does not ruin the facial shape. In fact, if someone has a slightly convex profile, treatment can even improve the overall facial appearance.
