Missing Teeth

In certain cases, orthodontic treatment may be the best solution for replacing a missing tooth. If there is no longer adequate space for a dental prosthesis, it may be more practical to close the gap by shifting the surrounding teeth.
Missing teeth are commonly encountered during orthodontic treatment. These cases generally fall into two main categories: congenital absence and tooth loss. Congenital absence means the tooth bud is not present in the jawbone and therefore cannot develop. This can be easily detected in childhood with a panoramic X-ray. Tooth loss, on the other hand, can result from various causes, with tooth decay being the most common. Nowadays, there’s a growing trend toward replacing missing teeth not with implants or bridges, but by orthodontically moving adjacent healthy teeth into the gap—this approach is suitable for both children and adults.
A frequent scenario is the loss of the lower first molar (the sixth tooth in the row). One therapeutic option in such cases is to move the second molar—and if present, the wisdom tooth—forward into the space left by the missing tooth. This is significant because it restores the chewing function that was previously lost. If the gap remains for many years, the neighboring teeth tend to tilt or erupt abnormally, which can complicate future prosthetic work or orthodontic tooth movement.
Orthodontic techniques allow us to “replace” the missing tooth relatively easily. This method has several advantages—for example, no foreign material is introduced into the body, as the replacement is done using the patient’s own teeth. Often, microimplants are used to assist in this type of tooth movement. These orthodontic implants do not integrate into the bone permanently. They help prevent unwanted movement of other teeth, which shortens treatment time. Once they’re no longer needed, they can be removed easily.
