What Causes Protruding Teeth?

Several factors may contribute to the development of protruding front teeth. The most common ones include inherited discrepancies in jawbone and tooth size—for example, when the upper jaw is overdeveloped or the lower jaw is underdeveloped. Childhood habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting during swallowing, or prolonged pacifier use may also lead to protrusion of the upper front teeth.

When Should Treatment Begin?

While each case is unique, it’s generally recommended to recognize and, if necessary, treat protruding teeth during childhood. An initial orthodontic consultation is advisable around the age of 7—most irregularities can already be detected at this point, allowing for early guidance of growth. At this age, removable appliances may be used and in some cases may even prevent the need for fixed braces later on.

Protruding upper front teeth are not just a cosmetic issue—they may have more serious functional and health-related consequences. They are particularly vulnerable during physical activities, falls, or accidents, and are often associated with bite disorders (such as open bite), which can impair chewing and affect speech development. Visibly protruding teeth may also make children targets of teasing, potentially leading to loss of self-confidence, anxiety, and withdrawn behavior.

During the first year of treatment, the monthly payment ranges between HUF 90,000 and 130,000—this includes the cost of the appliance and its adjustments. Following that, each visit entails a fee of HUF 45,000. For simpler treatments, the total costs may be even lower. After planning your treatment, we provide a detailed quote so that your expenses are easy to anticipate and manage.
