Open Bite

An open bite occurs when the upper dental arch does not properly close against the lower one. Although both arches are aligned in the same plane (so there’s no overbite or underbite), a gap still forms along the curve between the two arches.
Open Bite – What You Should Know
An open bite is a common bite irregularity in which the front or side teeth do not come together when the jaws close—leaving a gap between the two dental arches. This can lead to aesthetic concerns, as well as difficulties with chewing, speech, and jaw joint function.
What Causes an Open Bite?
Several factors may lead to the development of an open bite. The most common causes are childhood habits such as prolonged thumb sucking, pacifier use, tongue thrust during swallowing, or chewing on pencils. These behaviors mechanically block the proper closing of the front teeth. Genetic predisposition can also play a role. Another key factor is improper tongue posture—when the tongue pushes forward during swallowing, it can keep the upper and lower arches apart over time. Finally, chronic mouth breathing or nasal congestion (e.g. due to allergies) may also contribute to this condition, especially in growing children.
When Should an Open Bite Be Treated?
The earlier, the better. The condition can be identified during childhood assessments. Timely intervention allows us to influence jaw development during the active growth phase. In later years, treatment becomes more complex and time-consuming—and in severe cases, surgical intervention may be required.
How Can an Open Bite Be Treated?
Treatment depends entirely on the individual case—especially the severity of the anomaly, the patient’s age, and its underlying cause. In childhood, there is still room to guide growth and eliminate harmful habits in time. At that stage, removable appliances are often used to correct misalignments caused by thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or other bad habits. Functional devices may also be applied to influence jaw growth. In adolescence and adulthood, most cases require fixed orthodontic appliances to align the arches and close the bite. If a skeletal discrepancy is the root cause, a combined orthodontic and surgical approach may be needed, involving braces alongside jaw surgery to restore proper bite alignment.
